Efren Peñaflorida was awarded the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year
Another Filipino has received overwhelming international recognition. Modern Hero Efren Peñaflorida was awarded the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year for bringing education to poor Filipino children through his “Kariton Klassroom (mobile pushcart classroom)”. Through his group, Peñaflorida has successfully help former gang members, addicts and dropouts.
Peñaflorida has been selected after receiving the highest number of online votes, more than 2.75 million votes were cast for 7 weeks.
"CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute" was held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood Saturday night.
He received $100,000 to continue his project with his group, Dynamic Teen Company. Efren already received $25,000 for being included on the Top 10 CNN Heroes 7 weeks ago.
He was asked on what he will with prize money, Efren said, "Iyong 90% cash grant mapupunta sa Dynamic Teen Company. Iyong 10% sa church…. Nothing for me."
