An Indonesian woman gave birth to a baby boy, the recorded biggest baby ever born in that country, with 19.2-pound (8.7Kg) and 24.4 inches (62 cm), via c-section at a public hospital in North Sumatra on Monday. (September 21)

When a mother is diabetic, her glucose level is high during pregnancy. The baby can receive too much glucose and grow too large, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Hospitals wants a service fee hike due to.....

Is this greediness or they just really want to recover their losses over the Cheaper Medicines Bill to maintain their employees-business?

Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines (PHAP) want to raise fees on their service charges due to 50-percent slash in prices of the 21 essential medicines. They insist that the hike in service fees is a better move than retrenching workers or closing down in-house pharmacies.

Do you believe on PHAP's claims that their industry are now suffering?

Even though there's a 50 percent price slash on the 21 essential medicines, many don't believe that their losing money. Actually the current price of medicine in the Philippines are still much higher than the prices from other countries.

This is just a small token of sacrifice that they must take to help the less privilege but it seems their considerably greedy to understand. The government must investigate and open their books to see if they are really losing great amount of income.

This is the kind of things that makes the poor more poorer and the rich to become more richer.

Why President Arroyo haven't sign the EO for maximum retail price for cheap medicine?

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo really knows how to juggle her situation with the pharmaceutical companies and the much needed MRP of Cheaper Medicines Law.

The big pharmaceutical companies definitely doesn't want the maximum retail price (MRP) to be implemented but still they submitted their own product price reduction and now still pending.

Many are asking why is it that President Arroyo haven't sign the executive order that will implement the maximum retail price (MRP)?

An E.O. for maximum retail price will lower the prices (almost half) of more than 22 essential medicines that will benefit all Filipinos.

It seems the President has no intention of signing the needed executive order but if the EO is about blocking truth over corruption (like ZTE deal and Hello Garci scandal), the President automatically signed Executive Order 464 which prevents cabinet members, police and Armed forces to attend congressional hearings unless the President gives permission to those who will attend the said proceedings.

The Cheaper medicines law is expected to bring down the price of medicines in the Philippines but it seems this administration has no power to implement these especially the Presidential 2010 Election is just around the corner. (Possibly there bargaining for more funds coming from pharmaceutical companies for election campaign.)

Philippines: A(H1N1) - 131 new cases, totaling to 604 with one A(H1N1)-related fatality

As the pandemic virus spreads like wild fire, many are deeply terrified. Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday a record breaking A(H1N1) cases in a day (not a good thing). DOH confirmed 131 new cases, totaling to 604 with one A(H1N1)-related fatality.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said, “All new cases are mild in nature. One hundred seventeen of these cases are Filipino while the rest are foreigners. The ages ranged from two years old to 67 years old.”

The sad thing is prices of flu drugs and vaccine have surged up to three times their normal prices and with the scare, some very concern buyers is making the product increasingly expensive.

Red Bull Cola has cocaine; German states banned product

Your energy drink that gives you extra kick is now being pulled out in different states in Germany. Considering for a nationwide ban, German authorities found traces of cocaine on the high-energy drink Red Bull.

According to local reports, the cocaine comes from a process of de-cocainized extract of coca leaf in the drink, which despite its name, doesn’t actually take all the cocaine out. The process also means that Red Bull Cola has to be classified as a narcotic and needs a special license for sale.

States of Hesse and North-Rhine Westphalia have ordered retailers to stop selling the beverage.

Still the Red Bull company expresses that coca leaf extract were used worldwide as a natural flavoring and considered safe in the EU as well as in the US.

DOH confirmed Influenza A (H1N1) case in the Philippines; victimvis a 10 year-old girl

The bad news that many Filipinos doesn't want to hear, the epidemic "Influenza A (H1N1) virus has now reached the Philippines" but this news is now a reality.

Philippine Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque announced the first case of Influenza A (H1N1) in the Philippines, Thursday evening.

The virus carrier is a 10 year-old girl who just arrived in the Philippines last May 18 after a trip from United States and Canada.

Tested positive for the H1N1 virus, she had symptoms of fever, cough which is now gone but still suffering sore throat -according to DOH.

Duque said, the patient is now being quarantined currently being treated at an undisclosed medical facility.

The government is now tracing individuals who might have come into contact with the young girl and the passengers in the plane were the girl boarded.

The World Health Organization confirmed that there are now 11,034 cases including 85 deaths.

Until now Philippines is still free and has no confirmed case of the widely spread Influenza A (H1N1) virus but many Filipinos are starting to be scared because neighboring countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Korea and Hong Kong has confirmed cases and its growing. Its a matter of time that this epidemic will reach the Philippines.

Currently as of today, 40 countries have officially reported 9830 cases including 79 deaths.

44 confirmed deaths linked to Influenza A (H1N1) and 2371 cases

As of May 7, the World health Organization (WHO) releases an update to the growing number of confirmed Influenza A (H1N1) cases. The wide spread virus claimed 42 deaths in 1112 confirmed human cases of infection in Mexico and the United States registered two confirmed deaths in 896 cases.

Here's the following countries with confirmed H1N1 cases: Austria (1), Canada (201), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Colombia (1), Costa Rica (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (5), Germany (10), Guatemala (1), Ireland (1), Israel (6), Italy (5), Netherlands (2), New Zealand (5), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain (81), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (32).

With 2371 cases, travel restriction are being issued and recommended by WHO and they also reissue a joint statement with FAO and OIE that Influenza viruses are not known to be transmissible to people through eating processed pork or other food products derived from pigs.

WHO replaces "swine flu" name to 2009 "H1N1 influenza A"; 331 confirmed cases

The swine flu virus is not just hurting the health of many people worldwide, it is also hurting the economy especially business groups from hog farmers and producers due misinformation.

WHO reported that the virus is a combination of human and animal strains and has not been shown to be transmissible through eating pork or other pig products. The use of a wrong or inappropriate name label like "swine flue" has damage the industry.

The World Health Organization decided to stop using the term "swine flu" to avoid confusion. WHO will instead refer to the illness as "H1N1 influenza A".

WHO confirmed that "H1N1 influenza A" cases was found in 331 people which spread to spread to 11 countries.

Reportedly, the virus claimed 156 deaths and 2,500 illnesses in Mexico. United States confirmed 109 cases of the flu with one death. Other countries reported with this virus are Austria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Swine flu virus pandemic alert now on phase 5

The Swine flu virus problem is not slowing down. Number of confirmed cases increased rapidly across the world that force the World Health Organization (WHO) to raised its pandemic alert to 5.

The 2009 H1N1 virus claimed more than 150 deaths and 2,500 illnesses in Mexico. There are also 148 confirmed cases in nine countries. Germany and Austria became the latest European countries to report swine flu cases.

WHO urges different countries to make necessary health security measure to combat this outbreak.

Phase 1 – No viruses circulating among animals have been reported to cause infections in humans.

Phase 2 – An animal influenza virus is considered a potential pandemic threat because the virus circulating among domesticated or wild animals already causes infection in humans.

Phase 3 – An animal-to-animal or human-to-animal influenza resassortant virus has caused intermittent cases or small clusters of disease in humans, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission that could trigger community-level outbreaks.

Phase 4 – There is sustained human-to-human transmission of an animal-to-animal or human-to-animal influenza reassortant virus that could trigger community-level outbreaks. The WHO said that this stage indicates a significant increase in the risk for a pandemic, but it does not necessarily suggest that a pandemic will inevitably occur.

Phase 5 – There is human-to-human virus transmission in at least two countries in one WHO region. The WHO said this phase strongly signals the imminence of a pandemic.

Phase 6 – This stage indicates that a global pandemic is underway. There are widespread community-level outbreaks in at least another country in a different WHO region. This is in addition to the criteria prescribed in Phase 5.

Post-peak Period – Under this phase, pandemic disease levels will appear to be decreasing, but it will remain unsure whether additional pandemic waves will occur.

Post-pandemic period – The pandemic virus level will be similar to that of a seasonal influenza A virus. However, the WHO suggests that surveillance should be maintained and pandemic preparedness and response plans should be updated. A recovery phase and evaluation should likewise ensue.

Many feared that swine flu virus will be full blown global flu pandemic

Many are now terrified that this swine flu virus that centers in Mexico will be a full blown global flu pandemic which now sends a wave of panic around the world with the United States declaring a public health emergency and the same cases found in Canada, and some European countries. Currently, authorities put global pandemic alert to Phase 4.

This swine flu outbreak now claimed 152 deaths and more than 1,600 illnesses in Mexico. 64 confirmed cases in the United States; 6 in Canada; 11 in New Zealand; two each in Spain and the United Kingdom; and one in Israel.

Even though there is no swine flu virus in the Philippines yet, health security measures are been issued: banning pork importation from Mexico, US and Canada, using thermal scanning procedure for inbound passengers and urging the people to avoid kissing and hugging in public.

If you have this new variation of an H1N1 virus, the symptoms include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes around another person. People can become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes.

So far the thing that you can do if you have flu like symptoms, see a doctor right away and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

BFAD: Sunflower Crackers Blueberry Cream Sandwich is Safe

The Sunflower Crackers Blueberry Cream Sandwich tested positive for melamine contamination by the Hong Kong-based Centre for Food Safety (CFS) and was temporarily suspended its distribution to the market by the Department of Health (DoH) but now after the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) further tested the said product they declared it melamine-free.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque of DOH lifted the ban on the said Sunflower product.

Sunflower assured the public that all their product are safe. They also added that their milk comes from Australia and New Zealand.
